Values of F U M C

THE VALUES OF FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
SILSBEE, TEXAS
1. We are called to unity in the Body of Christ, recognizing and honoring
our differences while seeking the will of God above our own.
I therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, making every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. Ephesians 4:1-3
2.As followers of Christ we are a people set apart to be holy. We strive
to live by standards different from the world’s standards so that God
will be glorified in all our actions and deeds.
But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's own people, in order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 1 Peter 2:9
3.As recipients of God’s great kindness and love, we strive to be vessels that
carry to others the things that will nourish their souls. We will be in
mission to meet the needs of person in our congregation, in our commu
nity, and around the world.
"Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.” Matthew 25:40, Parable of the Sheep and the Goats
4.We are the Body of Christ, and as members of that body we are called to
be in worship, to be hearers and searchers of God’s Word, to participate
in the Lord’s Supper, to pray with one another and to pray in private,
and to observe fasting or abstinence. It is by these Means of Grace that
we experience God’s presence, power and strength through His Holy
Spirit in our daily lives.
Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:2
5.We value our Wesleyan heritage of leading the way for societal change and
progress. We encourage a progressive atmosphere which allows women as
well as men to use their gifts and talents to serve the Lord. We strive to be
inclusive and open to people of all racial and ethic backgrounds.
You are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. Galatians 3:26-28
6.We value Scripture as the primary guide of our theological beliefs, and strive to
interpret it in the light of reason, Christian tradition, and Christian
experience.
All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that everyone who belongs to God may be proficient, equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17
